Grip Strength, Resistance Training and Type 2 Diabetes

2024

Online

Presented by Elise Brown, Ph.D.

ACSM-ACS Cancer Exercise Specialist Course

2024

Online

The ACSM-ACS Cancer Exercise Specialist Course is for healthcare and fitness practitioners looking to provide safe, effective and individualized exercise programs to anyone living with or beyond a cancer diagnosis.

Why This Course?

Currently, there are approximately 18 million cancer survivors in the U.S., and according to the National Cancer Institute that number is expected to increase to 20.3 million by 2026.  Cancer treatments result in many acute, chronic or late-appearing toxicities that can negatively impact the quality of life of those living with and beyond a cancer diagnosis. Over the past two decades, convincing evidence has emerged on the ability of exercise and physical activity programs to provide significant physical and psychological benefits, reduce many cancer treatment side effects, and potentially reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.

The American College of Sports Medicine® (ACSM) Cancer Exercise Trainer certification program has now been revised and expanded, in partnership with the American Cancer Society (ACS) and CanRehab®. This new ACSM-ACS Cancer Exercise Specialist Course is designed to increase the number of competent practitioners able to provide advice and deliver safe, effective and individualized exercise and physical activity programs based on the most current evidence.

CSEP and ACSM reach historic partnership

Two of the world leaders in exercise science, sports medicine and personal training have established a new collaborative partnership. The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) and the American College of Sports Medicine® have announced the completion and execution of a Master Services Agreement between their respective organizations.

Recognizing the mutual strengths of each organization’s professional standards programs, this agreement will serve to endorse and enhance professional certification credentials and educational programming for Certified Personal Trainers and Clinical Exercise Physiologists in North America. The partnership will also further solidify ACSM and CSEP as the leaders in the areas of medical fitness, exercise science, physiology, and personal training.

Through the agreement, professional members from both organizations will not only be enabled to transfer certifications across the border, it will also include the introduction of ACSM-endorsed content in Canada and CSEP-endorsed content in the United States.

With more than half (approximately 60%) of all Americans and Canadians living with at least one chronic disease, the application of exercise therapy led by Qualified Exercise Professionals is a highly cost-effective means to reduce and manage the risks of disease and treat conditions including cardiac disease, diabetes, cancer, brain health, obesity, neurological disorders, and muscular dysfunction.

According to the World Health Organization, the estimated global costs of noncommunicable diseases attributed to physical inactivity cost $27 billion annually. Interventional programs led by ACSM and CSEP Qualified Exercise Professionals, including Exercise is Medicine®, are highly effective models to support the achievement of healthy physical activity targets and support the prevention and management of chronic disease.

Introducing the International Confederation of Sport and Exercise Science Practice (ICSESP)

Nathan Reeves, Nick Draper, Kirstin N Lane, Francis Neric, Keith Tolfrey, Kade Davison

The science of sport and exercise for health and performance has advanced exponentially over recent decades due to its widespread recognition as a distinct scientific discipline and the breadth and depth of research within the field. As the discipline has developed, a number of subdisciplines have emerged, examining key aspects of physical performance measurement and improvement, as well as exploring the role of exercise in various contexts of health and disease. Importantly, this has translated to significant growth in the recognition of university-level qualifications in sport and exercise science and increasing vocational opportunities for graduates. Despite slight variations in roles and titles between jurisdictions, there are now well-established professional roles in the sports and exercise sciences in several countries around the world. These include Clinical Exercise Physiologists specialising in the use of exercise as medicine for preventing and treating injury and illness, and Sport Scientists who use the science of exercise and human movement to enhance athletic development and performance.
