At the end of 2025, the Indian Society of Sports and Exercise Medicine (ISSEM) joined the International Confederation of Sport and Exercise Science Practice (ICSESP) as an Associate Member—and what an exciting journey it has already been.
From the outset, ICSESP has witnessed first-hand the remarkable enthusiasm and drive within ISSEM to develop a 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 (𝗖𝗘𝗣) workforce across India. There is a clear vision to build on the experiences and learnings of ICSESP member organisations that have successfully embedded CEP within their healthcare systems.
This momentum was on full display at 𝗜𝗦𝗦𝗘𝗠𝗖𝗢𝗡 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, held 11–12 April in New Delhi (https://issem.in/). ICSESP Director Nathan Reeves was honoured to attend, delivering a pre-conference workshop on Clinical Exercise Physiology Practice and a keynote presentation titled:
“𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗣𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗲: 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗘𝘅𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮.”
During the conference, Nathan proudly represented the ICSESP Board in officially welcoming ISSEM to the Confederation. It was a pleasure to share this moment with ISSEM leadership, including President Prof Dobson Dominic, Vice President Dr. Kiran kumar Kulkarni, General Secretary Dr Hanjabam Barun Sharma, and Treasurer Dr Gagan Kumar Banodhe, all of whom expressed strong optimism for future collaboration.
Beyond the formal program, ISSEMCON highlighted the true value of attending international conferences in person—𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Among many meaningful discussions, Nathan met with representatives from the Sri Lanka Sports Medicine Association (SLSMA – https://slsma.lk), including President Dr.Asela J B Ratnayake and President-Elect Upul Chaminda Bandara Madahapola. With CEP not yet established within Sri Lanka’s healthcare system, there was strong interest in learning from ICSESP members, with discussions now underway on future engagement.
Whilst in India Nathan delivered a one-day workshop on Clinical Exercise Physiology Practice at the All India Institute of medical Sciences, Patna hosted by Dr Banodhe. He was also joined by Dr. Atharva Dole, an Australian-trained Clinical Exercise Physiologist, to co-deliver a workshop in Pune—further strengthening knowledge exchange and capacity building across regions.
The ICSESP looks forward to continuing this exciting collaboration with ISSEM and practitioners across India, supporting the integration of Clinical Exercise Physiology as a vital component of healthcare for the Indian population.
